The standards for Quality Mussel products are based on best industry practice and are beyond the basic legislative requirements. The standards are also aligned to existing Marine Biotoxin Programmes to protect against potential biotoxins. The standards are continually reviewed by the expert technical group to ensure relevance.

The Mussel Quality Standards were developed by an independent technical committee of experts in mussel farming and processing.

Members of the committee included representatives from the Irish Sea Fisheries Board, the Food Safety Authority (Ireland), Food Standards Agency UK, the Marine Institute and industry governed by the Consumer Association.

This is a fully integrated Quality Assurance Programme comprising of integrated Standards. Each part of the chain must be certified in order for the mussels to be awarded the quality mark.
